Bombshell/Avent Cycles hires former BMX & MTB World Champion

October 27, 2006

by Press Release

October 25, 2006 – (San Diego, CA) Bombshell/Avent Cycles has hired BMX and Mountain Bike World Champion Mike King to their staff as the company’s Brand Manager. King will oversee many facets of the organization which will include areas of marketing and promotions, product development and team management.

"Bringing Mike onboard as Brand Manager was an easy decision,” says company President and Founder, Gary Hickman. “His successful racing and management career which spans over three decades will bring Avent and Bombshell a wealth of knowledge and experience. We believe Mike will strengthen and add some creditability to our product lines along with mentoring future athletes.” added Hickman.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” said King. “Avent and Bombshell make great products and I want to make sure we continue that path and become even more innovative. This creates a huge challenge for me which I look forward to.”

Before joining Avent/Bombshell, King was semi-retired racing a select few mountain bike events over the past two seasons, most notably, being one of top eight invitees competing in the Jeep King of the Mountain series. “My last full-time gig racing and managing was a rewarding experience for me. I was able to race at the highest level and help others reach their full potential. The time away from the sport has allowed me to focus on other projects and see what life had to offer.” added King.

Mike begins working for the organization on November 1 and can be reached by email at mikedhking@bombshellparts.com

Desire and commitment

Hiya all, well its been a hectic few days coaching with the BCF talent team guys. We worked in conjunction with some road/track specialists. There was around 30 riders, 9 bmx and the rest young fast road and track riders..

We took them to Harworth on Thursday and after some familarisation on the bmx bikes the track cyclists did a great job on the track. I was really impressed. They have heaps of power. We just worked on loosening them up a little, some them could be really good bmxers.

On the Friday we went to the Velodrome in Manchester and it was the their turn to show us the way. It was strange to ride a bike with no gears, no brakes and a fixed wheel around an extremely banked circuit. Ive never done it before but it was awesome. Thanks to Tim Buckle for that..

Arran and Deaksy held our team banner high. (if Deaksy could just concentrate on the riding more and not on the ladies!!) The guys all did a great job and went through a demanding training session. We also had talks from bmx legend Jamie Staff and World champion track cyclist Rob Hayles on Friday about their training and motivation. It was an eye opener for the bmxers and i think set a benchmark for the desire and commitment these guys will have to show if they really want to be champions.
I thank our road colleagues and Jez Hayes for making this possible, overall it was an insprising few days.
My new bike
Okay heres my new Supercross in metallic Green, its a peach. I didnt like the colour but after we put on the white rims and white forks it looks ace..I aim to put it on the gate for many a masters final next season. Meantime iam going to be riding some skateparks over the winter to work on my skills.

SPONSORSHIP
The whole sponsorship deal is now sorted but i will leave it to Alan to make the announcement that you already know. Safe to say all on the main team are going to have a bumper 2007.

Keep checking my raceskills blog for more updates and riding tips..

see ya Mike.

the biggest hint so far

I wonder who our new major sponsor will be next year?? Can you guess...

Meat and veg

The staple diet of winter!!!
Its going to be my first euro winter for 3 years yikes!!!
Although my first race back at Wales i was only two days back from Australia. It certainly felt like winter?

The nights drawing in and all that..The indoor in Sheffield is meant to be opening up so that will be a good focus for all the lucky folk living close by. Iam riding my road bike three times a week at the moment. Just keeping my legs spinning. Ive also got my dirt bike sorted for park sessions.
This is the maintenance stage
No point killing yourself now, its the close season for us.
We are looking at maybe 4-5 winter races where we can get the team to go and i will take the ez up and van. It will be a chance for us all to meet up and see the progress of riders.
Iam also looking at a couple of winter training sessions at Preston. Where we can all get together and work on a few basics. Dates TBA
Sponsorship
its just a case of dotting the dots on the team name now, but all the hard work you guys/gals did riding and making us number one has paid off. It might seem quiet now but believe me behind the scenes its all systems go here at ALANS NERVE CENTRE..
We are looking at the structure and main team for next season, nothing is decided yet.
Unfortunately we will all be under pressure to perform. With the new sponsors come more responsibilty but i know we all up to the task.

So we will be looking closely at how riders perform, train and promote the products we supply. With the new support team we can bring talent on or possibly move a rider to support status according to circumstances.

So if theres ever an incentive to keep your focus and fitness over these winter months. Its the prospect of pulling on the new Team gear and representing your sponors/team/club to the MAX.

Keep dreaming of those dusty tracks!!! see ya all soon

Alans team update

Hiya all, just an update on whats been happening. Ive been coaching for the BCF with the talent team last weekend. Two of our team riders where onboard, Alex Deakin and Arran Shrosbree. They did really well in the series of tests and represented our team to the max.
We finished the weekend with a mountain bike ride in the forest. Sounds easy eh? Well ask the riders..this was thigh burstingly good!

I got some good information on training as the BCF now has its own strength and conditioning BMX specific coach. So he has been looking at what excercises benefit bmx racing. Ive been busy working with Alan on the sponsorship side of things for next year. so thats why theres no training plans up yet iam also getting the latest information. As always in the field of excercise everything changes but the basics always remain the same. Watch this space.

Speaking of next season besides the (BIG SPONSOR) We have had stuff from Ison so you will run ODI Lock grips,Gusset saddles and some other things they have kindly sponsored our team to. Vans are supplying us with shoes etc. We are looking at getting the Rowley Squares for the team, stiff enough in sole and grippy enough to please all the flat pedal riders and nice for the clip on lads and lassies to pose in.
Fenwicks bike cleaner are also in with the team. So your bikes should be even cleaner next year!!!
Ive had most of the Shoe sizes/HELMET SIZES/T-SHIRT SIZES,from you all, we do need your contact details updating. We need you all to be contactable. We dont want it to be 2 months before we speak to you. We need info on your training, any injuries, the products we supply etc..Its all part of being in Alans Bmx team. So use my email or Alans to keep us updated.

Ive included a couple pics of our LEADER Alan Woods without his decision in 1980 to import bmx bikes probably we all would be rich millionare golfers instead of poor bmx racers DOH DOH DOH !!!
Seriously though many thanks Alan..

see ya Mike
